We are currently building at The Steeples on Stevenson Crescent, and we have donated eight fruit trees to Barton Community Association, in collaboration with the Edible Streets Project, to help with their mission to make urban areas greener and healthier.
After receiving a donation of £2,000, the project was able to purchase eight fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, greengage and almond trees. With the help of Oxfordshire County Council Community Tree Team, these have now been planted along Malford Road in Barton.
The Edible Streets Project is a collaborative initiative from Oxford Brookes University and Oxford County Council Public Health, who together are looking at how the spaces on streets can promote improvements in physical, mental and community health, alongside benefits for biodiversity and sustainability.
This year, with support from local architecture practice Sow Space, the project has been working with the community on Malford Road in Barton to co-create and implement an ‘Edible Street’. Raised beds for growing veg and herbs have been built on the verges, and local residents have been helping to plant a variety of fruit trees that can be harvested communally - creating a mini orchard on a residential road.
Commenting on the day, Lucy Crombie, Project Researcher, said: “We want to say a big thank you to Redrow South Midlands for kindly providing us with the money to purchase our trees. Everyone loved getting to work putting them in the ground and we hope they’ll provide fruit, shade, biodiversity, and a thriving community on Malford Road for many years to come!”.
Andrew Newman, sales director for our South Midlands division, said: “As members of the Barton community, we are keen to support local people who make a huge difference in the community. We want to say a big thank you to the Edible Streets Project, Barton Community Association, Sow Space Architects, and the Oxfordshire County Council Tree Team who have collaborated to make the neighbouring space close to our popular development, The Steeples, an even greener space with their trees. We are committed to creating a positive impact on the area and the community groups which help make Barton a great place to live. We look forward to working with the group and seeking their help on how we can continue to make The Steeples an even greener space to live in and seeing the fruits of our labour over the coming months.”
The tree-planting donation forms part of our ongoing commitment to promote health and wellbeing in the community. Located in the heart of Oxfordshire and within reach of world-class culture and history, The Steeples, is the perfect place to call home.
The Steeples is currently selling the final phase, offering a variety of three and four-bedroom homes, starting from £575,000.
