Learning is made easy for rugby-mad Steffan

26th January 2022
Redrow - News - South Wales - Steffan Calderbank - Apprentice

Rugby fanatic Steffan Calderbank has got a permanent smile on his face having captained his local rugby team to the top of the youth championship league and scored his dream job with us.

As captain of Mountain Ash RFC youth team, 18 year old Steffan was educated at Welsh-medium comprehensive school Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun. He joined us as a technical apprentice in September 2021 having completed an NVQ Level 3 in electrical engineering at Coleg y Cymoedd.

It was David Stimpson, a friend of the family and infrastructure manager at Cardiff’s Garden City Plasdwr that inspired Steffan to consider a career with a new home developer. Steffan explained: “Rugby is my passion but I’ve always had an interest in engineering and spent time watching new home developments being built near where I live in Mountain Ash.

“I found the whole process fascinating so would often ask David, a close family friend, about the work that he did. He’s always spoken with so much pride about his job so it was an easy decision to apply when I saw the apprenticeships advertised.

“As a five star builder, Redrow has a great reputation and I know that I’m working with the very best in the industry. I’m learning new skills every day and it’s been a real eye-opener to see just how much effort goes in to building one house. From finding the land to designing the site, securing planning permission, building each home and the whole sales process, the customer is at the heart of everything we do. It really is a team effort and everyone is so friendly that it makes learning easy. In fact, my parents say that I haven’t stopped smiling since winning the Blues Plate and joining Redrow last year.”

Richard Keogh is our Technical Director in South Wales. He said: “We’ve been building a proud reputation for beautiful high quality homes for over 40 years. Key to our success are the many talented people working in every department across the business who are committed to excellence.

“We encourage everyone to grow and maximise their potential and are especially proud of our development programmes for young people. Apprenticeships are a great route to tackling the skills gap and nurturing future talent which is why it is so rewarding to see young people like Steffan enjoying their work, developing key skills and becoming part of the Redrow family.”

With our head office based in Ewloe, more than 15% of our employees are either apprentices, graduates, or trainees. We currently have 16 apprentices in Wales, in a variety of job roles including construction, business administration, customer relations and sales.
