At Redrow, we use air source heat pumps to provide energy efficient heating to homes in our Eco Electric collection.

While heat pumps are generally extremely reliable and provide excellent service, we understand how frustrating it can be if something does go wrong with your heating system. So, we’ve put together a quick guide with simple solutions to some of the most common heating and hot water problems.

Before you call a technician and waste unnecessary time, have a check through the steps below; more often than not there’s a simple fix and you’ll be warm again in no time!

Air source heat pump troubleshooting

First things first – familiarise yourself with the most common myths about air source heat pumps so you know how they work and how to use them.

Step one - Check your heat pump

If you have any issues with heating in your new home, it’s a good idea to check the heat pump first. This is located outside in the back garden.

Start with the simplest check – is it switched on? If you can’t get your heating pump to switch on, it’s likely there’s no power going to it. Check your fuse box or consumer unit to make sure the circuit hasn’t tripped. If it has, switch it back on.

Once you know everything is switched on and powered up, ensure that the pump and surrounding area are clear of leaves and any debris.

Step two - Internal control troubleshooting

Next up is checking the system pressure of your heat pump. This might be displayed on a separate hot water cylinder, so have a look around until you find the appropriate dial. This should read 1.5 bar. If it is any lower, your system will need to be repressurised. Don’t worry, you can easily do this yourself!

Take a look at how to adjust your system pressure and follow our easy-to-follow instructions. Please note that the cylinder may look different to the one in the video but the function is the same.
