Consumer unit / Fuse box

Tripping

The consumer unit, also commonly known as the fuse box, is normally located on the ground floor of your home, sometimes the garage; if you are living in an apartment it will usually be found in a storage cupboard.

It is the main distribution unit for electricity throughout your home and should be tested every 3 months. On occasions, electronics or appliances may cause the consumer unit to 'trip' and this can cut out your electrics. If this happens, check each electrical item or appliance individually to find the fault. Once found, you will need to remove the faulty item and reset your consumer unit.

If the problem persists, check whether your neighbours have power – there could be a local power cut which will be the responsibility of the Electricity Supplier to resolve.
