Outside tap
Leaking or not working
It is crucial that you maintain your outside tap to prevent it from leaking and exploding in cold weather.
We recommend you turn off the water supply as winter approaches. The isolation valve is usually located in the unit beneath the kitchen sink and you can turn the valve with a flat-headed screwdriver. It is easy to turn back on as the weather improves.
If your outside tap is leaking, turn off the water supply as soon as possible. As long as you have followed the guidance to isolate in winter months and colder weather, contact us and we will organise for our plumbers to attend.
Switching external tap back on following winter months:
- Ensure external tap is in the open position
- Locate the internal isolation valve/stopcock under your kitchen sink (or where it connects your outdoor tap to the water supply)
- Turn the valve to the ‘on’ position
- Allow water to run briefly through the external tap to clear any air or debris from the pipes
- Close the external tap
- Return indoors to check the internal isolation valve, pipework, and fittings for any leaks or drips
