Standard vs Upgrade: What's included in a new build house?

1st February 2023
Redrow - Inspiration - Standard vs Upgrade - What is included in a new build house

Once you’ve chosen your new Redrow home, there are still some exciting decisions to make to personalise your home’s interior. One of the key advantages of a new build home over an older house is that it offers a blank canvas. You’ll have the opportunity to start making it yours right from the start.

You could select from a range of specification options – like shaker or contemporary kitchen cabinets – or you may be wondering whether to invest in some upgrades – like granite or silestone worktops.

Our homes offer a high specification as standard all designed bespoke and from scratch by our in house interior design team at Redrow. This is completely unique in the industry and sets our specification apart from our competitors.

It’s the Redrow difference which sets us apart from other developers, who do not offer the same quality. Kitchen doors and worktops, vanity cabinets, wardrobes and mirrors, appliances, and flooring are just some of the choices you can make. Once you know what is offered as standard in your new home, which is available to view on all your favourited properties on My Redrow, you can look at the optional extras and see which appeal to you and would suit your lifestyle.

If you’re wondering are upgrades worthwhile on a new build, read on to find out more about what’s included as standard and what’s an extra in your new Redrow home.

My Redrow

We are known for designing high quality homes exterior and interior, built to meet the demands for modern living with plenty of opportunities to make your home your own right from the start. What’s included as standard and the range of options and upgrades varies between locations and even between house types. Reserving early in the build process generally means you have more options to choose from.

The simplest way to find out what’s included in your new build house is via My Redrow, the members’ areas of our website. If you’re still searching for a new home, select the house you want to buy as favourite and click through each room to see the standard and upgrade options available, including any additional costs.

Exploring the choices and designing your dream home right from the start can be great fun. It’s also a practical and convenient solution. You can make all the decision online and in your own time, while adding things like carpets, flooring, additional tiles, extra sockets or media points means we can fit them before you even get the keys.

Eco-friendly options

Recognising that our homeowners are increasingly eco-conscious and want to reduce their impact on the planet, we’ve extended our range of optional eco extras.

For example, opting to add PV panels will not only reduce your energy usage immediately, it will also mean our installers can build the PV panels into the roof, rather than them sitting on top of tiles, which is often the case when retro-fitting.

We recently announced that all of our upcoming developments will have air source heat pumps. Not only that, all of our detached homes on these developments will come with underfloor heating as standard on the ground floor.

Kitchen choices galore

The kitchen  is the heart of the home and you’ll find all the ingredients for your new kitchen on My Redrow including cabinets, worktops and flooring. Options include contemporary or Shaker style cabinets in a range of finishes, which can be coupled with laminate, granite or quartz worktops.

The addition of a kitchen island can increase your worktop and storage space, while creating a stylish feature and providing a relaxed place to enjoy a coffee and a catch up with family and friends.

Paul, who lives in a four-bedroom Shaftesbury at Romansfield in Okehampton, said: “For me, bi-folding doors and a kitchen island were a great ‘nice-to-have’ for the house, and the Redrow team set about making that happen, which I couldn’t be happier about.”

Integrated appliances, from a selection of top brand manufacturers, are included in our kitchens with the option to switch brands and add extra appliances such as a dishwasher or wine cooler.

Your pans may play a factor in your choice of hob – gas, ceramic or induction.  Your cooking style or how many people you’re catering for may influence the oven selection you make. Do you want to have a double oven, two single ovens or perhaps a combi microwave and single oven or a steam oven?

We also offer options to help ensure your kitchen storage is stylish and practical. You can add a butler’s pantry, for example, plate holders, cutlery trays and even spice racks.

If you opt to have a washing machine and dryer or washer-dryer in your utility via My Redrow we’ll arrange for them to be plumbed in, meaning one less thing for you to arrange when you move.

High-tech picks

Whether you’re working from home or enjoying some down time streaming music, movies or binge watching your favourite programmes, we understand the importance of technology and connectivity in the home.

All Redrow homes come with FTTP (fibre to the premises) as standard and while broadband speeds will vary between locations and service providers, you should enjoy some of the best speeds in the area.

To help guarantee the best broadband speed at a great value price we’ve teamed up with Sky to offer an exclusive package to our homeowners covering phone, TV and broadband.

Using My Redrow there’s also the chance to add things like WiFi extenders to boost the signal, extra TV points, sockets with USB points and additional media plates.

Bespoke bedrooms

When it comes to bedroom storage, the style of your wardrobe is just as important as the clothes inside it. Main bedrooms generally come with fitted wardrobes tailored to fit the space to maximise its potential, with the option to add them to other bedrooms too. Hinged or sliding doors are available in a choice of styles.

To complement the finish of the wardrobes you could add coordinating furniture – perhaps a dressing table or chest of drawers. In our larger houses and Lifestyle designs the main bedroom includes a walk-in wardrobe, offering the epitome of luxury with plenty of storage space for all your clothes with enough room to try them on too.

A clean start in a new home includes the option to select the fixtures and fittings in the main bathroom, en suite and cloakroom such as the sanitaryware, floor and wall tiles. You may want to upgrade from half-height to full height wall tiles, switch from a standard mirror to a demister or illuminated mirror or add some practical touches – perhaps a basin cabinet with integrated storage, towel rail or toilet roll holder.

Outside space

For many Redrow homeowners, the garden is an extension of their living space. Options available to help you make the most of your outside space include the finish of the paving, perhaps extending the paving or having turf laid. For a low maintenance option, say no to the mow. Cutting back on how often you cut your lawn will encourage wildflowers to grow, helping wildlife.

You could perhaps add an outside tap or, for a more eco-friendly option, a water butt to collect rainwater to use in the garden.

Lighting can also be added, helping you make the most of your outdoor space into the evenings.
