Logan Hunka, 17, from Oswaldtwistle is the latest recruit to join our apprenticeship programme that helps the next generation of tradespeople to become qualified.
Logan, who attended Mount Carmel High School in Accrington, is completing his bricklaying apprenticeship at our Tabley Green development in Fulwood under the supervision of Matrix Brickwork.
“I wanted to work in a trade because it will give me the core skills that I can use for the rest of my career. My end goal is to be a site manager so an apprenticeship will stand me in good stead so I can work my way up, gaining key skills at every stage,” says Logan.
Tabley Green will eventually feature 170 brand new homes and Logan adds:
“I can’t believe that my work is contributing to building these homes that families will live in for years to come. I’m very proud of my work so far and I’m excited to see where it takes me.”
At any one time we have around 250 apprentices in England and Wales learning one of the key housing trades; including bricklaying, plumbing, joinery, electrics and groundworks, as well as administration and technical roles within its offices. Together with graduates and other trainees on formal training programmes, they make up around 15% of our workforce.
Claire Jarvis, managing director of the Lancashire division, says: “Logan is gaining new skills and qualifications during his three-year apprenticeship as well as gaining real work experience that will prove a huge advantage for the rest of his career. The combination of paid, on-the-job training with college-based study will give him essential industry recognised qualifications.
