Crucial lifeline for Congleton domestic abuse survivors boosted by Redrow funding

10th March 2023
Redrow - News - Crucial lifeline for Congleton domestic abuse survivors boosted by Redrow funding

A ‘crucial lifeline’ of support for families and individuals impacted by domestic abuse in Congleton has been boosted with £1,000 funding from ourselves.

Cheshire domestic abuse charity MyCWA (formerly Cheshire Without Abuse) can now offer survivors access to a monthly peer support group thanks to support from Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire John Dwyer, and Redrow.

The monthly meet-ups, facilitated by a domestic abuse specialist from My CWA, will give those impacted by domestic abuse the opportunity to connect with one other to share experiences; building their resilience and support networks. Topics discussed during the group sessions include Understanding Domestic Abuse, Self Confidence & Identity, Communication, Get Active, Managing Stress & Mental Health and Writing for Wellbeing.

Kate Ormerod, Fundraising Lead at My CWA, comments: “As a survivor voice-led organisation, we evolve our services according to client needs and feedback. Previously, domestic abuse survivors in Congleton have had to travel to Crewe or Macclesfield for face-to-face support, which has proven difficult and, for many, impossible due to childcare or transport issues.

“Funding from both Redrow and Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire John Dwyer has provided these survivors with a crucial lifeline - we expect this support could change the lives of over 200 families each year and the impact on the local community will be considerable. We’re immensely grateful for their support.”

The £1,000 funding from our Congleton community fund, created to support as many local groups, organisations and good causes as possible close to Roundhill Gardens; its latest development in the town. In total, £10,000 has been shared between 11 groups, including My CWA.

Amanda Hollins, area sales manager for Redrow NW, said: “The work My CWA carries out in its local communities is invaluable. With My CWA’s help, survivors have the tools they need to move on with their lives in a safe environment. It is great that survivors in Congleton now have these services close to home.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer said: “Supporting survivors of domestic abuse is a priority for me and Cheshire Constabulary, so I’m really pleased to be backing the work of My CWA through the Community Cashback Fund.

“It’s vital that survivors have accessible support on their doorstep and that’s exactly what these local meet-ups will provide. I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on people’s lives.”

My CWA also offers a weekly domestic abuse advice clinic at the Connected Community Hub ‘The Old Saw Mill’ in Congleton, providing confidential advice and support for survivors. The clinics help clients understand their rights, identify abuse earlier, and access services for financial advice and mental health support. Round Hill Gardens will bring a mix of three, four and five bedroom properties split into two phases – Blossoms and Woodlands.

Areas of the site are also earmarked for a new primary school, 12.5 acres of open space and local shops and will be subject to future planning applications.

Potential customers can explore a new customer experience suite that is digitally led, with interactive screens, showing site plans and local information including nearby schools and amenities.

The development is open seven days a week, usually from 10am-5.30pm. For further information call 01260 460058.
