Waterside apartments launch in Maidstone

14th March 2022

Our South East division has launched the first of 140 apartments at The Mill at Springfield, its popular community in the centre of Maidstone, on the site of the former Whatman Paper Mill.

As part of the initial launch, the first block of 28 apartments are now available to purchase, with the Government backed Help to Buy scheme available to first-time buyers. Further apartments are set to launch over the coming months.

The Mill was founded by James Whatman in 1733, primarily know for the invention of wove paper, used for art and printing. He and his son made several discoveries that led to the industrialisation of the paper industry.

The range of bespoke one and two-bedroom apartments are set in a waterside location, adjacent to the River Medway and Whatman Park on the opposite riverbank. Ideal for first-time buyers, prices begin at £219,995 with the Government backed Help to Buy scheme available for those who reserve by the end of the year, before the scheme ends in April 2023.

Each apartment benefits from a sweeping open plan kitchen-diner and living area with a high specification, including granite worktops and an integrated dishwasher. The two-bedroom apartments benefit from an en-suite off the principal bedroom, along with a separate bathroom and private balcony. Meanwhile, the one-bedroom apartments contain a large double bedroom, bathroom and ample storage.  All properties come with allocated parking, some of which is situated in a gated, under croft car park.

Once complete, the community will comprise 295-homes, all while retaining the site’s historic past. We have retained and restored the former paper mill’s iconic Grade II listed chimney and Rag Room. We also commissioned artist Kerry Lemon to design a range of public art, which is in the process of being installed across the site, including sculptures and two heritage trails, open for residents and the public to visit.

Joanna Wiley, Area Sales Manager for South East, commented: “Residents of our new apartments will truly unlock the best of both worlds with the secluded waterside location paired with the close proximity to Maidstone town centre. The added benefit of Help to Buy means these they are ideal for those looking to purchase their first property, offering spacious and modern homes, beautiful views and historic surroundings."

The Mill at Springfield is in the ideal location for those working in Kent or London, with a short walk to the town’s multiple train stations offering direct links to London and various other Kent cities and towns. Trains to London Victoria take just over an hour and the M20 and A229 are only a moment’s drive for those who commute by car.

In the heart of the Garden of England, Maidstone is close to an abundance of orchards, hop gardens and romantic villages, and vineyards, such as the renowned Biddenden Vineyards. Maidstone is also home to a vast array of entertainment, including music and food festivals. The Fremlin Walk Shopping Centre, The Mall, Maidstone and the Broadway Shopping Centre also cater to every shopaholic’s needs.
