The new community library was built by members of the Redrow team and has been filled with donations of both English and Welsh language novels for children. To take part, bookworms in the community can visit the sales centre at Cwrt Sant Ioan to browse through the library and swap their existing books for a new tale to enjoy.
Sian Rees is a sales consultant at Cwrt Sant Ioan. She said: “We love seeing the community take shape here at Plasdŵr and enjoy hearing how well the children are settling in. It was a real privilege to welcome pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School to site and we look forward to meeting more bookworms who want to enjoy our new library.”
Catrina Rhisiart is Under 7’s Department Leader for Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School. She said: “World Book Day is a great opportunity to share our love of reading so it is lovely that children now have the opportunity to swap books in this new pop-up library that Redrow has built for the local community. It’s a great idea and I’m sure that local children will be pleased to get involved.”
Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School is the first dual stream school in Wales organised as one-form of entry offering 100% Welsh-medium education and one-form of entry offering 50% Welsh-medium and 50% English-medium education. The school has 420 places for children of primary school age. In addition, there are 96 part-time nursery places, with half of the places being 100% Welsh-medium and half offering 50% Welsh-medium and 50% English-medium education.
Plasdŵr is identified in Cardiff’s Local Development Plan as the largest “strategic site” which will deliver new homes, district and local shopping centres and community infrastructure within phases. Up to 7,000 homes will be built at the site bordering Radyr, Fairwater, Pentrebane and St Fagans. Around 40% of Plasdŵr will be green space, including managed heritage woodland, parks and play areas.
