Markel Mandry Barrett (19) had been studying engineering for a year at college before realising the multiple benefits of an apprenticeship that he couldn’t gain through studies alone.
In pursuit of hands-on training, Markel joined our apprenticeship programme in 2021 as a technical apprentice with the Southern Counties division. Since then, he has been training at Maple Walk, our popular community in Liphook, and Cromwell Court, the upcoming scheme in Basingstoke.
When commenting on his motivations for becoming an apprentice, Markel said: “While I enjoyed my time studying at college, I still felt that I was missing out on the high levels of practical training offered through apprenticeship programmes. The opportunity to train with a housebuilder has provided the best insight in what I would be doing day-to-day in a future job. I would definitely recommend it to other young people in a similar position, who are weighing up further studies versus entering the world of work. An apprenticeship essentially offers the best of both worlds.”
Now over a year in and set to complete his apprenticeship in 2023, Markel is keen to use this training to climb the career ladder in the engineering sector and has many aspirations for the future. He explained: “I would love to become an engineering manager at Redrow, having really enjoyed my time here. Looking further into the future, the sky’s the limit and it would be great to eventually work my way up to becoming Chief Executive!”
We employ of upwards of 250 apprentices at any one time, providing schemes across a range of specialisms, from site management, maintenance, commercial and office-based roles.
When reflecting on the application process and the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on apprenticeship schemes more widely, Markel added: “During my search for available placements, it was clear that the pandemic had a negative impact on the number of options available for budding apprentices. The fact that Redrow’s programme remained unaffected was a clear sign to me of its resilience and stability, and I was thankful that my training would continue to go ahead as planned.”
Applications for this year’s apprenticeship intake open in March. To find out more, please visit: https://www.redrowcareers.co.uk/
