Two Yorkshire students can apply newly learned knowledge every day after joining our unique housebuilding degree course.
Undergraduates Adam Shakespeare and Neve Dilks are eight months into their first year of their three-year sponsored Construction Management degree programme at the Wakefield headquarters of our Yorkshire division.
The course was launched in 2017 in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Coleg Cambria and aims to teach participants the skills needed to work in a range of departments the business, including construction, sales, technical, land and planning, and commercial.
The dedicated degree programme is the first of its kind and is available for school leavers with a strong set of A-Level or BTEC Level 3 results and a desire to start a career in the industry; or for those with construction background looking for further qualifications.
Adam, 23, from Wakefield, decided that our degree was the right one for him after seeing the scope of the syllabus that takes in a wide range of different fields.
“The fact that we spend time in a mix of departments means we can really get a feel for what we might like to do after we finish our degree, I’ve particularly enjoyed being with the construction and commercial teams and seeing how the two departments work together to produce Redrow’s homes. I’ve also enjoyed looking at potential new sites with the land team.”
Adam says putting the theory learnt in the classroom into practice and then applying job-based experience when attending his university classes is one of the huge benefits of doing this degree.
“University is going well I am enjoying collaborating with the other undergraduates and seeing subtle differences in the way we operate and working together on assignments,” adds Adam.
Neve, 18, from Doncaster, says getting support from colleagues who have gone through similar experiences is really encouraging.
Neve says: “Having people around me who have either done the degree themselves or had a similar background to me is ideal. I’ve recently been working in the construction department and been on site at Langley Grange in Scissett - I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been inspecting homes at different build stages for NHBC checks – this has been really insightful.”
John Handley, managing director for Yorkshire said: “Prior to 2020, the degree programme was only available to existing employees, but this year we opened it up to external candidates and school leavers. Adam and Neve are among around 20 people on this year’s intake of the course.
“As a business we have a big commitment to recruitment, training and employee development: 93% of employees say they are proud to work for Redrow and we were the first and only housebuilder to achieve the Quality Mark from the British Institute of Learning and Development for the standard of training delivered. Encouraging the next generation into the industry is something, I feel, this course does perfectly.”
