Leeds site manager’s pride at winning top industry award

17th August 2021
Redrow - News - Yorkshire - Michael Brunell - Pride in the Job Awards

Site manager Michael Burnell is thrilled after winning a top industry award at his first attempt.

Michael, 32, was one of our 24 site managers recognised in the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards 2021, receiving a coveted ‘Quality’ Award for his outstanding efforts.

Launched just over 40 years ago, the accolade is one of the most highly regarded in the housebuilding industry and celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality.

And for Michael, based at The Avenue at Thorpe Park, Leeds, his home city, it’s doubly special because it was the first time he has won the prestigious award: “A Pride in the Job award is massively important. It’s recognition for the work that I do and it means I’m doing the job well. It also proves that when I hand over a house to a customer it’s as good as it can possibly be – and that’s a huge part of the job.”

Michael, from Leeds, trained as a bricklayer before progressing in his career and has been with us for seven years, firstly as an assistant site manager, where he worked with three previous Pride in the Job winners. He added: “After seeing past colleagues win this award it’s great that I’ve now accomplished this too, but I would add that it’s not just me who has won this award. It’s a reward for the whole team.”

With more than 16,000 managers in the running for the awards and only 450 chosen by the NHBC across the UK, this year’s winners - selected for their excellent standards on site - represent less than 3% of those who entered.

Wayne Morris, construction director for our Wakefield-based Yorkshire division, said: “This award is testament to the exceptional standards that Michael and his team work hard to achieve on a daily basis. He has shown the kind of commitment that runs throughout Redrow and its employees. We’re delighted that he has done so well this year and hopefully it will be the first of many for him.”

All Quality award winners now go forward to compete for a coveted Seal of Excellence this autumn.

Matthew Pratt, Group Chief Executive, added: “The last year has been challenging for everyone. It’s a testament to the fantastic work and commitment from our team that our site managers have picked up so many awards, and especially when considered proportionately against the number of homes we have built this year.

“I am extremely proud of all of them for upholding the high-quality standards that Redrow is renowned for during this time, and I wish them the very best of luck for the next round in the autumn.”
