Reece Brown, 18, and Travis Floyd, 16, are the latest recruits to join our apprenticeship programme that helps the next generation of trades to become qualified.
We actively encourage developing new talent and our Wakefield-based Yorkshire division will be facilitating Reece’s plumbing apprenticeship and Travis’ tiling apprenticeship.
Reece, from Leeds, went to Garforth Academy, and is currently working at Langley Grange in Scissett with sub-contractor J N Dunns.
Travis, from Wakefield, attended King James’s School, and is following in his dad’s footsteps to become a tiler and working with Premier Tiling.
“I’ve grown up surrounded by tiling and so it seemed like the natural way for me to go. I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship so far because I’m actually learning so much more than just the trade. I’m gaining invaluable life skills through talking to new people from all different industries and learning lots about the health and safety element that comes with working on a construction site too,” says Travis.
At any one time we had around 250 apprentices in England and Wales learning one of the key housing trades, including bricklaying, plumbing, joinery, electrics and groundworks, as well as administration and technical roles within the office. Together with graduates and other trainees, they make up around 15% of our workforce who are all on some sort of formal training programme.
John Handley, managing director of our Yorkshire division, says: “We are well known for our commitment to training and employee development, both for existing employees and new starters. Reece and Travis will combine on-the-job training with college based learning; they will guided by experts in their field and the hands-on training will mean they can put their skills into practice straight away.”
