Pupils from a local primary school took an afternoon away from their timetable to explore Churchfields, in Green Hammerton, and find out all about the design and construction of new homes.
Pupils from Kirk Hammerton C of E Primary School explored our show homes, learned about careers in construction and interviewed the site manager to find out how new homes are built.
The site visit followed on from our North Yorkshire Archi-tots competition, which aimed to introduce young people to the construction industry.
Kirk Hammerton pupil Ava Davis Blackburn won the North Yorkshire competition and was awarded the chance to visit Churchfields with her classmates as well as receiving £250 for herself and her school.
Lisa Appleton, assistant head teacher at Kirk Hammerton Primary, said the competition, which asked children to design a ‘house of the future’, indicated that she had some budding designers amongst her pupils.
“Spending the afternoon on site with Redrow was a great experience for the children. They carried out some tasks linked to building homes and careers in the industry as well as having a tour of the site,” she added.
“We would like to extend our thanks to Redrow Homes for not only running this competition, but for also being friendly hosts at their new housing development in Green Hammerton. The children and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Jonny Leivesley, marketing coordinator for our Yorkshire division was part of our team who welcomed the pupils. He explained: “To demonstrate the various roles in the industry, we played a game of ‘Who Am I?’ The children had to match a job description to a relevant image and then we discussed what that role involved. They asked lots of questions which was great to see.”
Jonny is one of around 130 of our employees who have recently undergone training to become ‘education ambassadors’. Their role is to form partnerships with primary and secondary schools within the local area and show teachers and students some of the many opportunities available.
“This follows our annual apprenticeship report, which surveyed 1,000+ parents, and found that 40% still believe a career in construction mostly involves manual labour; when, in fact, our apprenticeship and graduate programmes cover a wide range of roles, including commercial, planning and administration,” Jonny added.
The team also took the pupils onto the site where they interviewed the site manager Adam Bouncer and found out exactly how the homes are built. At the end of the visit, all children received a goody bag which included our branded children’s books.
Winner of a Best Residential Development Award as last year’s UK Property Awards, our Churchfields development has added 85 new homes to the village of Green Hammerton, including 34 affordable properties designed to help local people stay living in the area. Now, only a handful of private sale properties remain for sale with prices from £329,950 for a three-bedroom detached home.
