Site Manager’s award win is shouted from the roof tops

The site manager overseeing construction of new homes at our flagship Thorpe Park development in Leeds has praised the team that helped him scoop a top industry award.

Paul Cadman who works at The Point, part of the wider Thorpe Park development, was one of 21 Redrow site managers recognised in the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards 2020, receiving a “Quality” Award for his efforts.

Marking its 40th year, Pride in the Job celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality.

Paul said: “I’ve been trying to win this award for a while so was excited when I found out I’d finally won my first Pride in the Job Award. I think it helped that it was a new site that started about a year ago, which gave me a clean slate to have it exactly how I wanted it.”

With more than 11,000 managers in the running for the awards, this year’s winners have been hand-picked for their excellent standards on site and represent just 4% of those who entered.

Paul, who originally trained as a bricklayer, has been a site manager for nine years and has worked for us for two.

When asked what makes an award-winning site manager Paul said: “The devil is in the detail, from digging the foundations to putting a ribbon on the door, the detail is the key.”

He added: “Working for Redrow you have the tools to achieve what you want to in site management.”

Typically Paul is responsible for overseeing around 65 people working on site each day. This has recently been reduced to 40 due to social distancing measures introduced by us to ensure the safety of customers and colleagues.

“It’s important to have a strong team around you who enjoy being at work and will put the effort in. I couldn’t have done it without the team and they were shouting from the roof tops when they found out about the award,” Paul, 37, from Barnsley, laughed.

Wayne Morris, construction director for our Yorkshire division, said: “This award is testament to the exceptional standards maintained by Paul and his team on site. We’re so proud of Paul gaining the Quality award and wish him luck for the next stage of the competition.”

Commenting on the awards, NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: “Pride in the Job has been pivotal in improving the quality of new homes so it’s fantastic to be able to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Despite the numerous challenges the industry has faced in recent times, the very best site managers of 2020 have kept their focus on delivering high quality new homes for their customers.”

Following the announcement of the first-round winners, all successful site managers go on to compete for a Seal of Excellence and a Regional Award in their respective categories, subject to judges being able to undertake site visits. The next stage of winners will be announced at virtual ceremonies in the autumn.

We have planning permission for around 300 homes at Thorpe Park, alongside the shops, restaurant, cinema, hotel, gym, offices and new parkland that make up the wider development, six miles east of Leeds city centre.
