Redrow cements its commitment to young people

Housebuilder Redrow has thrown its weight behind a national campaign to promote investment in future generations after it signed up as a member of The 5% Club.

Currently celebrating its 40th anniversary year, Redrow Homes has joined a prestigious list of high profile companies committed to ensuring that 5% of their workforce are apprentices, graduates or trainees within the next five years.

In reality, 14% of the Redrow’s 1,300 employees have trainee status, making it a leader in the construction and housing industry for staff development. The company plans to increase that number by taking on 112 more apprentices and trainees this year.

The 5% Club is an industry-led scheme focused on creating momentum behind the recruitment of apprentices and graduates into the workforce. The campaign is backed by the CBI and has been praised by Government for its goals of asking the nation’s businesses to commit to invest in the next generation and help improve Britain’s future prosperity and growth.

Its members include FTSE350 companies who want to make a difference and support the UK’s ability to compete in increasingly tough global markets.

Karen Jones, Group HR director for Redrow said: “We’re proud to be a member of The 5% Club, which reaffirms our well-established commitment to apprentices and trainees. Belonging to The 5% Club validates our efforts, supports our drive to increase skills for the industry and reduce youth unemployment and is an integral part of our ongoing sustainability agenda.

“We also hope it will encourage other employers to contribute, especially those in the housebuilding sector, and that it will assist in our recruitment of more young people – we recently announced plans to take on another 112 apprentices, graduates and trainees in this, our 40th anniversary year.”

Redrow’s training schemes are designed to deliver the skills required to forge a long-term career in the sector and include trade and office apprentices, graduate trainees, technical trainees and trainee site managers.

Leo Quinn, CEO of QinetiQ Group, one of the founding companies of The 5% Club, said: “We welcome Redrow to The 5% Club and are delighted the company is joining this crucial campaign. The diverse make-up of the new members shows the commitment among the UK’s industrial leaders to tackle the real problem of youth unemployment.

“We continue to urge businesses of all sizes and sectors to follow Redrow and join with us in order to tackle the problem we suffer with 900,000 young people out of work in this country. By publicly committing and reporting their progress, members of The 5% Club are making a real difference to the social and economic future of this country.”

Redrow’s commitment to development of both new and existing staff was also a major contributing factor in the company being included in the 2013 Building Good Employer Guide, an independently compiled list of the construction industry’s top 75 employers. The company has also just been named Housebuilder of the Year at the 2014 Building Awards.
