Staff mark 40th year by raising £419,000

To celebrate Redrow’s 40th anniversary, dedicated employees of the national housebuilder have taken part in an epic charity fundraising mission.

Over the course of 2014 staff have raised a mammoth £418,922 for good causes through a variety of daredevil antics, fitness challenges and other activities. And that amazing total has since been boosted to £438,638 by further company contributions.

In January last year, the company’s operating divisions across England and Wales, plus employees from its Group headquarters and sister company Harrow Estates, were asked to select one or more local charities to raise money for as part of a 12 month “charity challenge”.

Staff took up the challenge with gusto, giving up their free time and no small amount of energy. From adrenaline fuelled trials of physical strength to culinary competitions, Redrow’s employees took on a whole range of fundraising activities including marathons, 200+ mile bike rides, skydives, bake offs, abseiling, canoeing, mountaineering and posing for charity calendars.

Teams also put their practical skills to good use on a number of refurbishment projects, including helping to build an extension to the Lymphoedema Clinic at St Catherine’s Hospice, in Preston, Lancashire; refurbishing the accommodation for parents at children’s cancer charity LATCH, based in Cardiff; and renovating a charity shop for Naomi House in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow Homes, said: “We’re very pound of everyone who took part in the charity challenge to mark our 40th anniversary and showed such enthusiasm and dedication. Our goal now is to create a lasting legacy and run the challenge every year.

“For 2015 we are introducing a company ‘matched giving’ scheme. This means for every £4 staff raise for their charity of the year, Redrow will donate £1, up to a maximum Redrow donation of £10,000 for every £40,000 raised per division.”

For the 2014 challenge, Redrow initially put £48,000 (£4,000 per division) into the pot. At the end of the challenge, the company boosted the totals further by naming three ‘charity stars’ – Bill Parker of the Yorkshire division, Fred Veevers from Southern Counties and Scott Chamberlain of the South Midlands division. Each was nominated by colleagues for special recognition of his outstanding fundraising efforts and received a further £2,500 for their division’s pots.

The company also awarded the three divisions who raised the most money across the year with an extra donation to their charities as follows:

•                     Lancashire, who raised £74,000, were given an additional £6,000

•                     South West, who raised £66,831, were given £3,169

•                     And Southern Counties, who raised a £61,953, were given £3,047.

The final grand Group-wide total, including company contributions, is £438,638.

A year later, with 359 employees, Redrow opened new offices in Alltami, not far from the present-day St David’s Park headquarters in Flintshire.
