Moston Club looks Knock-Out with help from Housebuilder

A Moston boxing club has a brighter looking home and a whole host of new equipment thanks to a deal with Redrow Homes that’s really packing a punch.

Construction staff and sub-contractors from Redrow’s St John Gardens and Abbot Gardens, both in Moston, and each less than a mile from Moston and Collyhurst Lads Club, have been helping to spruce up the club’s premises on Oscar Street – and it’s looking knockout.

They have given their time and supplied goods to brighten up the inside of the building, including kitting out a new community classroom.

The housebuilder has also donated £1,000 which has been used to purchase new boxing gloves, protective headgear, trophies and club hoodies.

The Lads Club is celebrating 100 years of serving its community and currently caters for up to 80 members a week – both male and female boxers between the ages of eight and 50 plus.

Improvements provided by Redrow included new carpets - with the help of Mears Carpets from Preston who fitted them - painting rooms, tiling, matting floors, installing radiators and emergency lighting, as well as some electrical works.

Former amateur and professional boxer Thomas McDonagh runs the club and has been boxing there since he was eight years old. He said: “We’ve had a huge amount of success over the years and have produced national and regional champions. Children and adults come to the club for a variety of reasons though. Some see it as a way to keep fit and for many it’s a welcome haven where they can meet others with a shared interest.

“Boxing is our main focus but we also now have a classroom, which Redrow has been helping to decorate and equip, that enables us to offer other things such as drama workshops. It’s a great space too for chilling and playing games and from September we plan to make it far more of a local activity hub to help us engage with the wider community.

“Redrow has been amazing and actually approached us to see if they could help. We gave them a wish list and they have come up with the goods. The whole building looks better and brighter and we can’t thank them enough. The company has supported us before so has seen the benefits the club brings to local people.”

Claire Jarvis, sales director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), added: “It’s a pleasure for us to support the Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club and, in turn, the wider community. It’s not only producing champions, but also providing a great sporting and social space for children and adults alike. We are glad to be able to help.”

Redrow began its association with the Moston area of north Manchester back in 2010 as part of a regeneration project working closely with Manchester City Council. The aim has been to change the face of the neighbourhood while providing new homes and jobs for local people. Redrow’s new homes in the area have proved popular with more still being built.

St John Gardens, on Kingsley Avenue, currently has a selection of three-bedroom homes available with other three and four-bedroom properties coming soon. Prices start from £134,995 for the three-bedroom semi-detached Ledbury. At Abbot Gardens, off Kenyon Lane, the three-bedroom Buttermere semi is available from £156, 995.

The Government backed Help to Buy scheme can reduce the initial price of these homes by up to 20%, via an equity loan, which is interest free for the first five years and requires only a 5% deposit. This means an initial outlay of only £107,996 for the Ledbury and £125,596 for the Buttermere.
