Redrow Scoops Award for Innovation

A Redrow project set up to raise awareness of occupational health-related issues in the construction sector has resulted in a top innovation award for the housebuilder.

The “Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs” campaign which ran throughout 2016 scooped the award at the North West Construction Group (NWSCG) Health and Safety Awards which were held at the Park Royal Hotel in Stretton, Warrington.

The developer was recognised for the scheme which involved nine interactive contractor roadshows across the country as well as a suite of toolbox talks and posters targeting key occupational health related issues: dust control, skin exposure, vibration and noise.

Claire Oakes, of Create Construction Ltd and chair of the NWCSG, said Redrow’s project stood out for the judges because it had “reacted to the fact that health related issues are a massive concern within the construction sector” and had led a “proactive campaign”.

She added: “The campaign was launched from the top and rather than use the same old ‘wear your mask’ type posters, they wanted contractors and their employees to think about what they do at work and how this could affect them in their private and social lives. This initiative showed how working together with a supply chain, partners and contractors can really make a difference.”

The award follows on from Redrow’s ‘Outstanding Organisation’ award at last year’s ceremony, presented to recognise a project that saw more than 110 lifesaving defibrillators placed at its housing developments across the country.

Dave Ford, health and safety director for Redrow Homes, said: “With the Innovation Award this year and the Outstanding Organisation award last year, it’s clear that Redrow is leading the way when it comes to these sorts of projects.

“Occupational health issues form a key component of the HSE’s proposed work plan for the construction sector, as every week around 100 people die from construction-related ill health in the UK with less than half of construction workers staying employed in the industry until they are 60 due to health conditions. So it’s fantastic that this project has received such high praise and that it could make a real difference to the sector.”

Redrow Homes is one of the UK’s leading homebuilders, directly employing more than 2,200 people and providing work for around 7,000 contractors each month.
