With many people now using social media platforms like Instagram for home inspiration, new communities are forming between individuals who love sharing photos and stories of their home buying and interior design journey.
Online community of inspiration
At Redrow, we love being a part of that community and sharing some of the fabulous content created by our homeowners with our own followers.
To find out more about this new home network, we spoke to two of our lovely customers who’ve found design inspiration, new friendships and thousands of followers.
“I’ve made so many friends on Instagram, including some of my new neighbours, it’s such a great community,” says Victoria Melluish, who set up her Instagram account @oxford_on_the_drive shortly after reserving her Redrow home in Astley, Greater Manchester with her husband Michael.
Having always been “mad about homes” she began using Instagram to find design inspiration and quickly found likeminded people to connect with and share a love of interiors.“I’d never set up a home account before and I couldn’t believe how many there were out there.”Victoria began documenting the couple’s journey while their new home was still being built. Now, almost a year on, she continues to post regular decorating and styling updates. “It’s really exciting to share posts and stories and I never expected to have so many followers,” she said. “I’m a solicitor and never really considered myself to be that creative so I find it very flattering that people enjoy seeing our home transformation and want to know more.”
This is Victoria and Michael’s fourth home together in 10 years and their style has changed with each home. “Our first home had lots of bold colours, while our last house was quite glam with mirrored furniture. In this house my husband has pretty much given me free reign and I’ve kept the design very classic.”Victoria’s favourite room is her two-year-old son William’s bedroom, which features safari print wallpaper from B&Q, a dark green wall and animal themed accessories.
She added: “I find most of my inspiration on Instagram. If I see something online, I like to see where I can source similar items - often for a fraction of the cost.”
We’d always wanted a Redrow home and I’d seen other purchasers documenting their journeys on Instagram so I thought ‘why not do it too?'
Redrow homeowner Michelle Wright, who works in retail, started her account @thewrightwayhome_ after buying a three-bedroom Ludlow home in Hamilton, Leicestershire, with her husband Pete, a building surveyor, and their two daughters Mia, 11 and Lola, eight.
“I bought my first home at 21 and I’ve always loved making a house a home,” said Michelle. “We’d always wanted a Redrow home and I’d seen other purchasers documenting their journeys on Instagram so I thought ‘why not do it too?’.”
Michelle’s favourite room is her kitchen diner, where the family spend most of their time, and she receives lots of questions about décor. Her favourite ‘bargain’ purchase is her set of three window-style mirrors, which are tagged as being from Home Bargains; and she tags other retailers so her followers know where items can be purchased, such as her painted grey and oak sideboard from Very.co.uk and her chandelier from Next.
“I use Instagram every day and I’m always answering questions. I’ve ‘met’ lots of other homeowners on Instagram and lots who live in Redrow homes nearby. I love seeing what they’ve done with their homes, especially other Ludlows, as they’re all styled so differently.”
