Daresbury Garden Village developers Redrow have donated a class growing kit to nearby Windmill Hill Primary School, which will be used to plant fruit and vegetables in the school grounds.
As part of our Get Set Grow initiative, the gardening equipment, seeds and planters have been provided to several schools across the North West to encourage children to grow their own food and establish an interest in the outdoors from an early age.
Gill Gleave, business manager at Windmill Hill Primary School, said: “The children love their new growing kits and have already had lots of fun this summer term trying their hand at planting their own vegetables.
“Redrow’s initiative is a great way to introduce the children to growing their own food and teach them about healthy eating. It also supports with our outdoor curriculum and encourages children to get closer to nature, with all the benefits that brings.”
Included in the kits are bamboo plant pots, watering cans, cotton gardening gloves fork, trowel and rake sets and a host of rainbow vegetable seeds from peas, carrots and radishes to courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes.
Anna Evans-Kerr, sales director for Redrow (NW), said: “Get Set Grow is a new initiative and we’ve really enjoyed working with local schools across the North West to deliver the growing kits.
“The children at Windmill Hill Primary School have been really keen to get outdoors and grow their own fresh produce. We’re pleased this equipment has been so useful and hope it can be used every year. Outdoor learning is a great way for pupils to practice new skills and connect with the natural world, which also boosts health and wellbeing.”
Daresbury Garden Village will eventually include 800 properties across 120 acres of land, with open spaces, green corridors and areas for play.
