Northwich charity receives funding for vital equipment

11th April 2023
Redrow - News - Northwich charity receives funding for vital equipment

Northwich Community Support has received a financial boost from ourselves so volunteers can continue to provide food to families in the area.

The charity aims to prevent or relieve poverty in Northwich and surrounding areas through the distribution and provision of donated surplus food. It also provides support, services and advice to individuals and families in financial need.

The funding from ourselves has been used to purchase a fridge and freezer for its new central food store.

Lee Burstow, from Northwich Community Support, said: “At our food store, we collect, process and arrange the distribution of surplus food collected from supermarkets, local retailers and food distribution centres to our four local food hubs. Our new, reliable equipment means we can collect perishable and frozen foods in addition to the fresh food collected so we can help more people and continue to comply with food hygiene regulations so no food goes to waste.”

The charity reduces Northwich’s carbon footprint by reducing food waste which would otherwise go to landfill. Every member of the team is an unpaid volunteer, and they rely on donations to cover costs.

Lee continued: “Our no food waste scheme currently serves around 300 people a week and we have over 5,000 Facebook followers. We help individuals and families in financial need and those who wish to reduce food waste so everyone can stretch the pennies.”

The charity works from four hubs around Northwich: The Barn Owl in Barnton, St John’s Parish Hall in Sandiway, The Lighthouse in Weaverham and Rudheath Social Club.

Area sales manager for Redrow North West, Caroline Thompson-Jones said: “This zero-food waste initiative is so vital for the Northwich community. Not only does it help those who need support with food, it also enables families to live more sustainable lives. We’re thrilled that we’ve been able to help that charity so it can expand on its food offer and help even more families in the area.”

To find out more about the charity, including opening times for their hubs, please visit Northwich Community or visit their Facebook page: Northwich Community Support.

The community fund donation is linked to our Hartford development located on Woods Road, a selection of three and four-bedroom properties is currently for sale.
