Thirty children from Hendredenny Park Primary’s Year 3 swapped their school uniform for high vis vests and hard hats for a morning visit to our De Clare Gardens development in Caerphilly, south Wales.
The seven and eight-year-olds, joined by class teacher Miss Deering, spent the morning at the development at Hendredenny Drive. First they learnt about the importance of health and safety on site as they put on their PPE, then work was halted as they ventured onto the site with site manager, Iain Scott-Williams, who talked to them about sustainability and housebuilding.
The children then sat in one of the development’s green spaces to sketch the new homes being built.
This was the first visit we’ve been able to host since opening at De Clare Gardens in November 2020. The new community, which will eventually comprise 260 two, three and four-bedroom homes as well as landscaped green spaces and play areas, is already forming, with seven homes occupied since the first residents moved in this April.
Site manager, Iain, said it was great to welcome young visitors to the site.

“We’re always really keen to engage with the local communities where we work, and this visit has been a brilliant opportunity to talk with the children about safety and sustainability, , as well as tell them a little about construction,” he said.
“This is the first visit we have been able to hold here, and it’s been a really good one. The children were really interested and asked some great questions.”
“The children have been so excited for this morning’s visit,” said class teacher, Miss Deering.
“They have really enjoyed the visit today and it’s been a great, authentic experience for them to participate in.”
