Good placemaking is a key principle for all of us, which is why we’re pleased to have now signed the Wales Placemaking Charter.
Endorsed by almost 100 organisations in Wales, the Placemaking Charter was developed by the Welsh Government and the Design Commission for Wales in collaboration with the Placemaking Wales Partnership – a multi-disciplinary group representing professions and organisations working within the built and natural environment.
The Placemaking Charter features a commitment from some 98 signatories including developers, land owners and public bodies who have pledged to:
- Involve the local community in the development of proposals
- Choose sustainable locations for new development
- Prioritise walking, cycling and public transport
- Create well defined, safe and welcoming streets and public spaces
- Promote a sustainable mix of uses to make places vibrant
- Value and respect the positive distinctive qualities and identity of existing places.
Jane Carpenter is our Planning Director in South Wales. She said: “At the heart of our commitment to designing a better way to live for our customers is our set of placemaking principles that are known as Redrow 8 Wales. These are customer-led, focussed on building thriving communities and fully aligned with national policy and best practice.
“As the leading premium homebuilder, we’re proud of our Welsh heritage and passionate about leaving a legacy of attractive and vibrant homes that are healthy and happy places to live. Signing the Placemaking Charter is a reflection of our focus on addressing key placemaking and environmental challenges by creating sustainable places and reaffirms our own Redrow 8 strategy that underpins all that we do in Wales.”
Redrow 8 Wales is an innovative placemaking framework that sets out eight design principles that define how we achieve sustainable development on all of our sites. These are: listening to learn, keeping it local, easy to get around, places to go and things to do, nature for people, streets for life, homes for all and built to impress.
