Rute is an Assistant Site Manager in the South West. She is an incredible, hard-working employee who has had such a positive influence on the male-dominated field she works in. We met with Rute to discuss her role, past work experiences and fun memories at Redrow.
Hi Rute, can you tell us a little bit about what it is that you do at Redrow?
“I am an Assistant Site Manager. I help pre-plan the developments, write schedules, order materials, keep check of stock, take care of health and safety, and the general welfare of the facilities. I get to interact with construction workers, the sales team, office teams, buyers and customers on a regular basis – I love how varied my role is!”
Tell us a little bit about your career before and whilst at Redrow?
“Before coming to Redrow I worked in planning for Lisbon council. However, I always wanted to take a more active role in construction so three years ago I started my degree in engineering.
I can’t say it enough; I love working for Redrow. As a woman working in construction as well as being from Portugal I was a bit worried about how I would be received. Women are severely underrepresented in this field, but I strongly believe that women can bring so much value to any construction site. I have only ever felt acceptance from my line manager and wider team. Redrow is like a family; they look after you and you always have their full support.”
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
“I usually start my day by checking my emails and doing some quick admin. Then I head over to the site to make sure all the procedures are in place and try and find solutions to any issues we might be having. What I love about my work is that I’m in charge of my own schedule and no two days look the same. Some days are more admin focused and on other days I’m on site most of the day.”
What is the secret to a great Redrow development?
“Redrow is very traditional in its construction; we use sturdy, quality materials as opposed to timber which is what most other developers use these days. Security and a high standard are top priorities.
The way we work as a team also has a big impact on how the buyers feel both before and after purchasing their dream home. We continue to do courtesy checks six weeks after purchase, just to make sure everything is up to standard and that the customers are happy.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“I enjoy spending time with my husband and eight-year-old daughter. I also play hockey for the Weston-super-Mare women’s hockey team and I coach there as well.”
Any funny stories from work that you would like to share?
“At work I am known for being incredibly clumsy. One time I was on site and needed to speak to the plumber when I saw him walking towards his car. I started running after him, and as is quite typical of me, I fell and struggled to get back up. So, I shouted “Stop the plumber!”. This has now become a running (no pun intended!) joke on site.”
