Bristol family overcomes housing market challenges during pandemic with our support

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the property market particularly hard. Some construction work was put on temporary hold and therefore the already high demand for houses in the UK increased drastically, coupled with house viewing restrictions and mortgage delays.

Tara and Andy felt the impact of Covid-19 as they sought to transition from their grade II listed home to a new-build.

“We made several attempts to move out of our period building but kept encountering problems.” said Tara.

“Our initial problems were due to missing consents for the work that the previous owner had done on the listed property. We then ended up in chain situations, where sellers pulled out of deals due to concerns about prices dropping once Covid restrictions lifted. Finally, we had to deal with mortgage delays and additional checks due to Covid.”

However, thanks to the Help to Buy scheme, Tara, her husband Andy and their 11-year old daughter were finally able to move into their new home in Frenchay Gardens, Bristol, in March 2021. Tara stated that they wouldn’t be where they are today without the scheme, as well as our support and patience.

“We can’t recommend Redrow enough! They have been incredible through all the ups and downs and were the ones who finally got us over the finish line. They were kind, compassionate and most importantly they understood our situation.”

While there are benefits to purchasing an older building, buying a new build can act as a blank canvas. It offers a fresh start with the latest technology, greener options and lower bills.

Having left the familiar struggles of a period build such as maintenance of timber windows and strict grade II regulations, Tara is thrilled to finally have acquired the three-bedroom, detached house of her dreams:

“We are in love with our new home. It is so great that I still live in a house that has character without the problems that come with a period building. We’ve also found Frenchay to be the ideal location for us and have found a real sense of community in the area. There’s a local pub close by and we have met many people walking our dog in the green areas nearby.”

Homeowners will benefit from a wide range of first-class facilities, from allotments and sports pitches to play areas and even a dedicated primary school.

The popularity of Frenchay Gardens is reflective of our research which revealed prospective homebuyers are increasingly looking to move away from city centres to more green and open spaces.
