A young Exeter apprentice has secured a solid career foundation thanks to our scheme offering a range of key trainee roles across the business and is urging others to do the same.
The scheme offers trainees paid positions across the country, in a variety of roles ranging from bricklaying and groundwork to customer service and administration.
18-year-old trainee carpenter Reece Beer, from Exeter, landed a place on our apprenticeship scheme at the popular Saxon Brook development after deciding that a career in a carpentry was one that would offer him maximum job satisfaction a solid career path.
Naturally drawn to design and technology in school, Reece quickly realised that he wanted to work with his hands, and woodwork was something he enjoyed.
He explains: “I enjoyed design and technology a lot at school, so chose a two-year joinery course at college. When looking for placements, Covid hit, which made things a bit trickier as there were less opportunities around.
“I spotted the Redrow apprenticeship and it looked perfect, so I applied quickly. I was really pleased to be successful. I saw straight away from the information and the quality of the homes they build, that it was a great opportunity. When I met Kim, my site manager, he explained that being on site was hard work but very rewarding, and I haven’t looked back.
“I am gaining some really useful skills, developing high quality workmanship and get on really well with the rest of the team. The days just fly past as the work is so absorbing, and from my first day I worked on major structures like roofs. It’s rewarding to see the work I’m doing completed, and for people to move into the new homes that I’ve helped build.
“If anyone is considering an apprenticeship I would say don’t hesitate. Hands-on training on the job is the perfect way to understand the workplace, see the results of your training in practice; and of course, earn a salary. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!”
South West area construction manager Kim Bucket added: “Reece is an asset to our team. He is enthusiastic, hardworking and a team player. Apprentices of his calibre are the lifeblood of an efficient team. At Redrow we are proud to offer a range of apprentice opportunities across the business, and the potential for a rewarding career with a quality housebuilder. Many long-standing and talented staff at Redrow started as apprentices, so it’s a great route into the industry.”
