Skills for life are being developed by young people in Congleton with help from Redrow and the Bromley Farm Community Development Trust.
The trust is a resident-run group and had applied to our Congleton Community Fund for support for its youth groups pre-Covid.
The funding was originally due to have been used towards rock climbing and abseiling sessions, designed to encourage young people to learn new skills and develop confidence and team work. Bad weather and then Coronavirus restrictions meant organisers had to re-plan.
Glen Williams, chairman of the Bromley Farm Community Development Trust, explained: “We’ve been working with 25 young people aged 11 – 14 to help them develop new skills, get more involved in shaping the community where they live, make new friends, participate in new activities and have lots of fun.
“We’ve had to suspend our usual sessions due to Coronavirus restrictions and have been looking at alternative ways to engage with young people. This included an outdoor event where they were able to develop their culinary skills by preparing, baking and eating their own pizzas, with the ingredients sourced using the funding we received from Redrow.
“While they were cooking we were able to chat with them to find out how they had coped during lockdown and how we may be able to support them going forward. Sessions like this help promote positive engagement, create aspiration, encourage team work and increase confidence.”
We support for the youth activities organised by Bromley Farm Community Development Trust was via the homebuilder’s voluntary community fund attached to the Cranberry Gardens development of family friendly homes.
The scheme has shared around £10,000 amongst good causes in the area.
Head of sales at our North West division Anna Evans-Kerr said: “Cooking is an important life skill and it’s great to see Bromley Farm Community Development Trust helping young people learn to cook for themselves. We were happy to be able to support the project and help make a difference to the young people of Congleton.”
