A bug house, three mud kitchens and a set of outdoor scales have all been built and donated by the local Redrow team from the Cwrt Sant Ioan development. They will be used for outdoor learning by pupils in the Under 7’s Department.
Elliot Kingdon is our Site Manager at Plasdŵr. He said: “These aren’t the usual type of homes that we build! Plasdŵr is really starting to take shape now and Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School is at the heart of the community so it is a real privilege to be helping the school with the facilities that they need to inspire and motivate the children with outdoor learning. In fact, many of them live in a Redrow home so it’s lovely to see them now enjoying their new school.”
Catrina Rhisiart is Under 7’s Department Leader for Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School. She said: “Redrow are building the homes around us and are also helping us to build some wonderful facilities for our pupils.
“Spending time outdoors helps children to be fit and healthy while outdoor learning boosts confidence, social skills, physical skills, knowledge and understanding. Our outdoor learning environment is therefore such an important aspect of the education we provide for children, starting with those under seven. We are very grateful to Redrow and look forward to continuing to welcome more pupils to our school, including rising 3’s.”
Ysgol Gynradd Groes-wen Primary School is the first dual stream school in Wales organised as one-form of entry offering 100% Welsh-medium education and one-form of entry offering 50% Welsh-medium and 50% English-medium education. The school has 420 places for children of primary school age. In addition, there are 96 part-time nursery places, with half of the places being 100% Welsh-medium and half offering 50% Welsh-medium and 50% English-medium education.
Plasdŵr is identified in Cardiff’s Local Development Plan as the largest “strategic site” which will deliver new homes, district and local shopping centres and community infrastructure within phases. Up to 7,000 homes will be built at the site bordering Radyr, Fairwater, Pentrebane and St Fagans. Around 40% of Plasdŵr will be green space, including managed heritage woodland, parks and play areas.
